Review of The Adventists’ Dilemma

The Adventists DilemmaJoel Watts reviews the book The Adventists Dilemma, which is distributed by Energion.

His conclusion:

Vick’s work is measured well for answering Adventists and pushing the non-Adventist into thinking about proper theology. For those interesting in logic and reason as regards to particular theological discussions, Adventist or not, I would urge you to pick up this book.

Interview with Allan Bevere

The Politics of WitnessJoel Watts, at Unsettled Christianity, has posted a very nice interview with Energion author and editor Allan R. Bevere.

A great deal of the interview centers around Allan’s book The Politics of Witness. A good takeaway:

In the end, what matters most for the world is not who is in the White House and which political party controls Congress; what matters most for the world is the faithfulness of the Church of Jesus Christ in being God’s kingdom come for the world. That is the church’s true politic.

Quote and Question of the Year

From Dave Black*:

New Testament Christianity is not reserved only for super saints who are doing all the “right” things church-wise. It is for every believer, whatever your church structure, whatever your location or occupation, whatever your circumstances in life. Jesus wants to live His life through us in the world. The only question is: Will we let Him? Our problem today is that we want it all, and we want it now. But we have to choose our priorities. Yes, I will continue to call us back to the Scriptures as far as church life is concerned. But my constant prayer is that God will help me to do it with a broken heart and with a renewed willingness to make a deliberate calculation to accept sacrifice and suffering for the sake of following Christ.

I’d like to make the message in this quote the focus as we move into the new year. I like discussion. I like disagreement. I think we grow by being challenged and then studying out why we believe what we believe and then hopefully changing accordingly.

But if we stay in the church, in our homes, or in whatever atmosphere is comfortable to us while we try to straighten out our theology, and everyone else’s, we will never get around to the mission of the church. And you know what else? We will never manage to settle all the issues either. The more we look inward the more contentious we will get over more and more minor issues.

But if we put first things first, many of these other disputes will seem much less important, and it’s possible that as we serve, we’ll come to understand more of the way God sees them.

Let’s ask this question in every decision of 2012: How can I let Jesus live his life through me in this situation?

An Incarnational Christmas Witness

We hear the word “incarnational” quite a bit these days, and I think that’s a good thing. We need to center our lives, our activities, and our witness around that central doctrine of Christianity.

I’m in the Ft. Worth area visiting my daughter, son-in-law, and three granddaughters. I’ve been reading the book of Hebrews today. The epistle from the lectionary for Christmas this year is Hebrews 1:1-12. The prologue to the book of Hebrews is indeed an exceptional statement of the incarnation as is the gospel lesson for Christmas: John 1:1-14.

Youth Ministry NOT Working

D. Kevin Brown maintains that youth ministry today isn’t working. He’s taking his information largely from the Southern Baptist Convention, but I see little difference in the success in the United Methodist Church.

He’s written a book, and Energion published it: Rite of Passage for the Home and Church. He’s calling on us all to radically change the way we think of—and do—youth ministry.

I think there’s room for such radical change, don’t you?

For Advent – The Nature of Hope

From Inspiration to UnderstandingFor the Advent season, Edward W. H. Vick, author of the newly released book From Inspiration to Understanding: Reading the Bible Seriously and Faithfully, presents The Nature of Hope.

Here’s a taste:

Yahweh was not the God of the past only. He could stride across the length of the future leaving newly fulfilled promises and newly awakened anticipation in His train. Yahweh was a living God, He had made his will known in His doings. These doings had passed into history and yet were not past. They had passed into history, but they were present in being remembered. But not only that, the God who had performed them then was the God who acted now. The Hebrew lived between memory which was no mere memorial, and anticipation which was no mere wistfulness.
